Screen House

A substantial remodel and addition to a suburban, mid-century stone home, Arch11 proposes a lacy, translucent steel mesh box.

The result juxtaposes one another in weight, opacity and program. The heavy stone base is selectively pierced allowing public areas to connect to the garden and wooded yard. The light, transparent upper level houses sleeping, bathing and meditation spaces. A woven metallic screen serves to protect these private spaces from leering neighbors and the searing afternoon sun. The two stories are connected by a circulation and service spine that also brings daylight into the center spaces of the house.
